In football, maintaining possession under pressure is crucial for controlling the game. Controlled possession drills improve teamwork, passing accuracy, and decision-making under pressure.
Drill Setup: Create a small-sided game area (20x20 meters) with two teams of five players. Assign one team to maintain possession and the other to apply defensive pressure. The possession team must complete a minimum of 10 passes before attempting to transition to a designated end zone. The defensive team scores points by intercepting passes or forcing errors.
To increase intensity, introduce a two-touch rule, requiring players to make decisions quickly and avoid holding onto the ball for too long. Play each round for 5 minutes, with 3-4 rounds in total. Rotate roles between possession and defense after each round.
For more advanced players, add a neutral "joker" player who plays for the team in possession, creating numerical superiority and encouraging strategic play. Alternatively, increase the size of the area to incorporate longer passes, or reduce it to demand tighter control and faster decision-making.
Practicing this drill twice a week improves passing accuracy, spatial awareness, and teamwork, directly translating to better game control during matches.
